Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen

Introduced by Widmer in 1984, this is supposedly the original American Hefeweizen. I can see how it has lasted so long in an increasingly crowded microbrew market; it is everything a Hefeweizen should be. Cloudy in the glass, light and fruity on the nose, and very refreshing on the tongue. There's a trace of hoppiness, but no bite. Not too sweet, not too bitter; just right for a refreshing summer cooler. No slice of lemon is needed, but, hey, it couldn't hurt.

Having said all that, I must still render judgment that it is not quite the same level of sublimity as Franziskaner Hefeweizen. That's not meant as a knock; there can only be one absolute best, but this is an excellent example of the style.
