Galaxy-Hero

4.0 stars

Appearance: Pours a semi-translucent, bright orange body with a frothy white head. Sticky lacing clings to the glass for a decent amount of time.

Aroma: Galaxy! Incredibly fresh, crisp and dry. There is a tangerine, orange, mango pungency - like a tang. Slighter sugared grapefruit peel. A vinous chardonnay grape dryness in the background as well as slight strawberry sweetness.

Taste: Relieved that it doesn't taste like fruit punch. Pine notes that aren't that intense but still very forward in the taste. Some definite sweetness but nothing too much. The hops aren't all that bitter but still give hopheads like myself the satisfaction we're looking for. The hops linger around for quite a while and are the last aspect to fade. The taste otherwise doesn't change that much over time.

Mouthfeel: An oily beer that sits on your palate even an hour after I have finished the bottle. Leaves me wanting more.

4.0 stars

Appearance: The look of this one is awesome. Very clean in appearance. Fully translucent body. Silky off-white head that clings almost fully to the glass and sticks around for several minutes before fading into a light frothy layer on the top.

Aroma: Exotic and citrus fruits explode into the nose. Pineapple, mango, grapefruit, and tons of orange and tangerine. Ever-so-slight bready malt character.

Taste: The taste does not let down from the stellar appearance and waft. More exotic pineapple and mango than grapefruit, though there is some definite tangerine-like character in there. Slight citrus peel bitterness, but the sweetness that balances is spectacular.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, but drinks dangerously light. Very sharp, clean, crisp, and refreshing. Oily and moderate-heavy carbonation.

Founders KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout)

5.0 stars

Appearance: A glorious pour, complete with fireworks going off in the yard behind me. Huge, viscious, oily and black - good god almighty this is a super thick stout and exactly how I prefer them. A thin, dark khaki head tries to form on the surface for a couple of second, but it is quickly sucked back down into the pitch-black depths of stout goodness. Strong, sticky lacing coats the sides of my glass with a motor oil-like film of brown "goo." "Wow!" is all I can muster.

Aroma: "Like getting beaten over the head with a sack of fresh Colombian coffee and then getting a swirly in a bourbon barrel." Huge notes abound - Kentucky Bourbon, with its sumptuous, sweet aroma and slight sting to the nostrils; vanilla and charred, earthy wood from the oak barrels; fresh, dark coffee; chocolate-covered espresso beans. So many roasted notes - coffee, burnt toast, toasted oats. Oh my this is mouthwatering just taking in this stout's aroma.

Taste: What a hit. To be honest, everyone in my family was asking for a sip of this after catching a whiff of the nose - "I wonder what that tastes like?" "Go ahead and take a sip," I say, offering to share my only bottle with all who are curious. And each time the response was the same: "Oh wow! This is beer? This tastes too good to be a beer. Really? This is a beer? This tastes like something you should have with dessert!" I live in a family of bourbon enthusiasts... I should have known to brought another bottle!

Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is full and extremely creamy due to a low carbonation level. This really is a perfect mouthfeel. Absolutely zero harshness for such a big beer must not be easy to pull off. The flavor and nose express themselves even more as the beer warms without adding any of harshness attributed to some other IS's when consumed at higher temperatures.

Founders Devil Dancer

4.0 stars

Appearance: Gorgeous ruby-hued amber, clear as day, with a small eggshell-white head. There is not much head, nor does it show much staying power, but at 12% ABV that's not a surprise. Thin, wispy lacing. This liquid looks as though it is dancing - the name and label artwork are perfect.

Aroma: This thing smells like hoppy Kool-Aid with an alcohol burn...but I mean that in the absolutely best possible way. It's so sweet it's like candy, but with the most glorious hop aroma I have ever experienced. You see aroma and flavor descriptions like "pineapple", "mango", and "peach" thrown around a lot, and most of the time the description is close (...to a point - more-so as a reference and not a literal 1:1 description.) But in Devil Dancer...it's as though the most perfectly ripe of hand-picked peaches and pineapple and mango were gently crushed, dusted with the lightest bit of sugar, and delicately dipped into this delectable ambrosia. And the alcohol, while certainly apparent, is integrated so well into the thick fog that hovers over this beer that it merely adds yet another dimension of interest. This aroma is 100% unique to Devil Dancer, and it is glorious.

Taste: The joyous triumphant tears of the heavens were wrung into this bottle. Is this what the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil tasted like? Incredible hop flavors, again, of literal pineapple, mango, papaya, peach, and the sweetest and most bitter of grapefruits mingle and sway in concert with a strong but never imposing malt backbone. The massive bitterness is slowly and dramatically unveiled in the middle of a sip, like the unfurling of a velvet curtain, and it slowly and triumphantly withers in an embrace with the bright and glowing sweetness until only the resplendent wreckage of your palate remains, begging for another adventurous sip.

Mouthfeel: Syrupy, slick, thick, and oily. Mouth-coating and tongue-destroying. Oppressive yet embracing. This is a lover and a fighter, with equal parts of each. The interplay between sweet and bitter, delicate and destructive, delightful and disastrous, is unmatched in my experience. The vapors of alcohol and sheer bitter carnage waft ominously from an open mouth after only a few sips. This beer is both reason and insanity, and it is magnificent.

Stone Cali-Belgique

5.0 stars

Appearance: Poured a thick head, clean white-beige in color, with above average retention, gradually declining to a thin cap atop the body. The alpine lacing was exceptional with strong spider webs on the sides of the glass. The body was fairly transparent, slightly hazy golden orange color, with the carbonation migration visible on the glass.

Aroma: Aroma is densely fruity, with mango, grapefruit rind, and cardamon-coriander like spices being readily apparent, resting on an appropriate Belgianish yeast (slightly Brettanomyces-like mustiness) and a some what earthy pepper-clove blend.

Taste: The overall flavor is a very tropical mix, very complex with some pineapple and mango characteristics being the most obvious attributes. Front of palate picks up the malt sweetness joined to earthy grapefruit rind. Mid-palate balances Belgian yeast, slight bit of Brettanomyces, mild hop bitterness, and very subtle malt sweetness quite well. Back of palate is pleasantly bitter, quite dry and not slick. Also as subtle as the malt, are the complex spice notes of coriander, cardamon, ginger and cloves.

Mouthfeel: Quite dry, quite quenching, sharp and crisp. Medium carbonation level with a nice light bitter aftertaste

Imperial Russian Stout

5.0 stars

Appearance: The pour is clear and quiet. In the glass it's almost pitch black with scant hints of color at the very bottom. The head is a dark mocha tan and packed with big bubbles. Despite it's small stature, it was retained very well. Thin lace covered the glass when the foam dropped to a creamy layer.

Aroma: The nose bursts with potent, intricate roasted malts. Light coffee weaves in and out of dark chocolate that's drizzled with molasses. Black cherries and raisins add a low and dark fruity nature to this imperial stout. A rich caramel malt sweetness gives a good balance to the exceptional nose. Some toffee, mocha, and vanilla notes also aid in the massive complexity of this amazing nose.

Taste: Thick, robust roasted malts coat the tongue in a beautiful malty glory. Like the aroma, the flavor is vastly complex. Molasses, chocolate chunks, coffee bean, caramel cube, and a toasted bread malt flavor make up much of what I get. Then toffee, mocha, and vanilla bean all wander in like a dribble of coffee creamer. The potent alcohol that's noticeable instantly on the first sip, just seems to fade away. This is one of the most exceptional flavors I've had the pleasure of tasting.

Mouthful: Rich and chewy, it's a beyond-full-bodied brew that coats the throat all the way down like syrup. The carbonation is perfectly balanced to deliver a smooth drinking experience. With it being low, it also explains the lack of a larger head.

Founders Devil Dancer

4.0 stars

This is one hell of a big beer. Definitely a sipper. This beer has been "Dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties." On the nose: Everything is strong here. Getting some massive tropical fruit character. Pineapple, mango, apricot. Some floral notes in there. There's a huge amount of sweet malts. Touch of caramel. Lot's of sweetness. Taste: First thing I noticed is a big soapy character upfront. Massive sweetness comes next followed by some floral hop character. There is some of the tropical fruits but not as strong as the nose. There is some bitterness but not as you would expect for 112 ibu. The sweetness and malts dominate the bitterness and a lot of the hop character. The mouthfeel is big and syrupy. Low on the carbonation. You would never know this is 12% and 112 ibu. This is definitely worth a try. It's a fun beer to drink but I couldn't imagine drinking more than one.

5.0 stars

Poured a thick, frothy, white head that dissipated shortly. Lots of aromatic hops, but it's not an IPA. This dry hoped blond is real nice. Balanced to the bitter side, but it's nice and crisp and goes down like nothing. Dry pines and lots of hops, but it's not an IPA. I hope this is a regular, but I'm afraid it will be a seasonal.
IPA (India Pale Ale)

5.0 stars

Appearance: When poured from the bottle a handsome, ivory white head formed the width of two fingers and held steadfast for a delightfully pleasant amount of time, which allowed me to fully immerse myself in the consumption of this divine beer.

Aroma: At first, one might assume that the aroma emanating from the beer is just like every other IPA they have ever had and they would be utterly and completely correct! There is so much complexity in the aroma of this beer but it still has been crafted with an uncanny sense of refinement. These guys knew what they were doing; so much so that they bottled it and sold it and the rest is history.

Taste: The taste of this beer is utterly and perfectly sublime. The hops, much like greed in the politics of today, been ubiquitous throughout every aspect of this beer and the flavor factor is no different (77 IBUs!). Think of this beer as a massive earthquake formed deep in the ocean that generates a tsunami with each subsequent after-shock continuing to create wave after wave for a significant period of time.

Mouthful: The feel of this beer as it is consumed should not be compared to a tsunami nor an earthquake but to that of a baby’s bottom. While I have never actually felt the aforesaid, I have heard tale of the unequaled smoothness of such and this beer is no different, smooth. In fact, it is absolutely the smoothest liquid I have ever consumed. The finish leaves your feeling like you just spent the day wandering in the desert but at 6.9 ABV that is expected.
