The Time Traders

The Time Traders is a difficult novel for me to judge because it is possibly the first Science Fiction novel I ever read back in the mid 70's and it carries a lot of nostalgia for me. I have read it several times now and just completed it again.

It is classic 50's with a young protaganist, Cold War backdrop, aliens and time travel. The novel follows the exploits of troubled young criminal Ross Murdock who faces jail time or volunteering for a government agency. The agency, it turns out, sends spys back in time searching for the source of the Russians new found technology. Ross has been chosen to go back in time as part of a team disguised as primitive traders.

Ross quickly ends ip on his own allowing for a lot of character development. For a supposedly troubled youth he gets with the program a little quickly but otherwise he is well written. The novel leaves a lot of open hooks for future books. At least two were written but the central character and concept change.

It is a good book. Perhaps a little dated. I particularly noted that it is mentioned that the space race died after a few satellites.
